The first time I read Satan’s Affair by HD Carlton was in 2022 shortly after reading Haunting and Hunting Adeline (The Cat and Mouse Duet). I loved the book back then and after finishing reading Phantom recently, I decided to go ahead and give the entire group of books a reread.

Premise

Upon first look the carnival attraction looks like a simple dollhouse, a creepy one for sure, but a dollhouse none the less. Inside, visitors to Satan’s Affair – a traveling carnival, are terrified by gruesome props, dressed up dolls, chainsaws and more. However, the scariest part of the dollhouse lives behind the walls. There she watches and casts her judgments on the people who come through. She hunts down the demons who live and work among us, who have committed the most heinous crimes, and in that house they’ll take their last breath.

My Thoughts

First off, you do not need to read any of the other books in the Cat and Mouse universe to understand what’s happening in Satan’s Affair. HD Carlton does a pretty fantastic job of writing the books as standalones. However, in my second read through, I caught a whole lot of little Easter eggs that she planted, probably wondering if readers would catch them all.

I think the thing I really loved about Satan’s Affair was the plot itself. This book has twists that will have you sitting up straight with shock. It will also likely have you rereading certain scenes in the other books to put all the strings together.

“I’m not crazy!” I screech. I take a deep, calming breath and arrange the smile back on my face. “I’m just passionate.” – Satan’s Affair by HD Carlton

Sibby has an absolutely heartbreaking story and the way the book ends it leaves you begging for more from her and her henchmen.

“Not a single soul passes through the threshold of this house without me casting judgment—determining if evil resides in their soul. As they make their way through the maze of my dollhouse, I watch from inside the walls. They’re all judged. Every single one of them.” – Satan’s Affair by HD Carlton

This is a why choose romance, with plenty of spicy scenes in the story. However, we only get Sibby’s point of view. I will for warn you, the spicy scenes in this story are pretty intense and even include some gory details. However, none of the scenes take away from the story and by the end you’ll be begging for a sequel to the Sibby story.

Zade from the Cat and Mouse Duet does make an appearance in this story and it’s probably my favorite part. Even as I was rereading it, I was looking forward to the scenes that included him.

“I smile big. I have my first friend.” – Satan’s Affair by HD Carlton

Overall the vibes in Satan’s Affair by HD Carlton are extremely dark and twisted. I would even venture to call it more on the side of Horror Romance with how graphic the scenes get.

This is the part where I try to compare a book to other books, and well… this might be a bit difficult but I’m going to try. These recommendations are based off of vibes.
