I picked up That Time I Got Drunk And Saved A Demon by Kimberly Lemming back when I had first gotten back into reading several years ago. It was an instant favorite, there was a moment, at first, that I thought I might put the book down as not for me, until Kimberly proved me freaking wrong. Suddenly I couldn’t stop reading it, I canceled my plans for the day and read this book from cover to cover.
That Time I Got Drunk And Saved A Demon by Kimberly Lemming
That Time I Got Drunk and Saved A Demon by Kimberly Lemming is book 1 in the Mead Mishaps series. The best way to describe this book, and others in the series, is fantasy rom-com. It has 260 pages of laugh out loud goodness. I read the eBook, I believe through Kindle Unlimited. My Thoughts
It’s not often that I pick up a book and immediately want to be best friends with the author because their sense of humor matches my own so closely. In this case, absolutely, 100%, Ms. Lemming I want to be bff’s! Kimberly is a fantastic author who will have you cracking up laughing while rooting for her characters.
She so vividly creates a world that sucks you in, and if you are like me and can visualize what you are reading, you will be transported into the book so quickly you won’t be able to put it down. I highly recommend cancelling your plans, grabbing a blanket and a drink, and hunkering down to read this book and the entire series.
“I had only two things on my mind; cheese and how to get home.” – That Time I Got Drunk And Saved A Demon by Kimberly Lemming
It may be because this was my first real introduction into truly spicy books that has me thinking back and saying yes, it was filled with spice scenes. When I first read it, I actually blushed and giggled while reading the spice, and even had a moment of jaw dropping when reading the dubcon scene, which I had initially thought wasn’t my cup of tea, but well… things change. And honestly, it was all really well done.
Not so surprisingly, the things that really caught my attention in this book were the world building and the character development. She created this fantasy world and mixed in our modern language so seamlessly that it just created a hilarious but beautiful blend. Then Kimberly went and got me attached to these amazing characters she created. I swear these books are a portal and I was sucked in and living it out with these characters.
Furthermore, Kimberly created these amazing side characters and brought them together as a found family. All of the characters have these quirks and individual personalities and they come to life on those pages so clearly it’s almost hard to close the book when you’re finished.
As far as twists in the story go, I wouldn’t say their were twists, just more so unpredictable moments. I loved that while I had a general idea of where it was going there were still moments that had me sitting up straight and asking, “Did that just actually happen?”
“Oh, the troubles I go through for my wife.” A thrill went up my spine at his words. “Am I really? We don’t need to have a ceremony or register with the church?” “Darling, we burned down the church.” – That Time I Got Drunk and Saved A Demon by Kimberly Lemming
Vibes of the book are absolutely fantasy meets dark romantic comedy, with a side of cozy. Surprisingly, with as fast paced as the book was, it was immediately added to my cozy read list. Understand, my cozy isn’t always what other people expect to be cozy because I have ADHD. However, if you read this and believe it’s cozy too, you are my people and we should take over the world.

Check out my thoughts on the other books in the Mead Mishaps series:
I have been looking for an author who could compare to Kimberly Lemming and that is damn hard to do. However, if you are a fan of Ruby Dixon, January Rayne, or Amanda Aggie, I’d say you should absolutely give the Mead Mishaps series a read.
