The Pucking Wrong Date by CR Jane Review

The Pucking Wrong Date by CR Jane is the dark hockey romantic comedy I needed to escape into. From the moment we met Disney in book two, I was ready to see how this wholesome seeming man would behave once an obsession took hold.

Premise

Olivia Jones, or better known as Olivia Darling, is the disgraced pop star who lost all of her rights when her mother and manager set her up. She rarely goes out in public, and refuses to do anything with her career because her voice is the one thing she has complete control over. When the chance to go to a hockey game and be anyone but herself for a night comes knocking, she’s ready to jump in. She’ll allow herself this one night, one night with Walker Davis.

Triggers

List the Triggers found in The Pucking Wrong Date by CR Jane include:

  • Stalking
  • Manipulation and dark obsessive themes
  • Sexually explicit scenes
  • Birth control tampering
  • Addiction and drugging
  • Physical Abuse (on page not MMC), past sexual assault and present attempted sexual assault

My Thoughts

The whole story starts out with Olivia as a child getting a big audition. From start you want to reach through the pages of the book and choke Jolene – her mother. And it only gets worse from there.

Olivia was a child who was not protected and cared for throughout her entire life. She was a cash grab for her mother and manager, and when she decided she’d had enough, they sabotaged her in the worst possible way.

But all of that will change once Walker Davis meets Olivia. He’s determined to make her his, in any way he can. And while in real life his actions – birth control tampering – are absolute trash, in fiction I am eating it up like a little trash panda.

“She was fucking staring at me. She raised both hands slowly and flipped me off and I almost passed out on the ice, just from having her attention.” – The Pucking Wrong Date by CR Jane

He takes obsession to a whole knew level and somehow it is completely hot, again only in fiction.

“But in order to have the chance to be the good guy…I was going to have to be the villain first.” – The Pucking Wrong Date by CR Jane

The thing to keep in mind though is Walker Davis is looking out for Olivia in ways that no one else ever has. He wants what’s best for her, and in the process will do anything to keep her with him. I mean the guy carries around handcuffs in his pocket to make sure she doesn’t run away from him.

“The ref blew the whistle, but instead of giving the puck back, I dropped it to the ice and then smashed it towards the glass with a forceful smack of my stick. The guy jumped as the puck cracked against the barrier in front of him, his eyes wide in shock. Someone next to him said something and his gaze shot to mine. I ripped my helmet off and gave him my best death glare, making a cutting motion across my throat as I mouthed the words: “She’s mine.”” – The Pucking Wrong Date by CR Jane

We get spice pretty early in the book, and then again after the two are reunited after their absolutely unhinged one night stand. And the spice spices perfectly. It never feels out of place and it’s sooo freaking good.

While Olivia’s story is similar to recent real life situations, I did feel the author did a good job of making Olivia’s story her own. It highlighted the mental health issues that can come from an abusive conservatorship while also showcasing her finding her own strength again.

Lincoln and Ari make appearances in this book and we love seeing them and the dynamic but we also got two more additions in Camden and Logan, who are both getting their own books too. So I cannot wait to see how the Circle of Trust plays out by the end.

I think my favorite parts of the book, however, are the ones that include Monroe and Blake. The way they welcome Olivia is so sweet, and she needed their friendship.

“Monroe smirked. “Jokes on Lincoln, I would marry Edna or Mabel in a heartbeat just for their cookies.”” – The Pucking Wrong Date by CR Jane

The book is a dark hockey romance but if you like dark humor and unhinged obsessive men, you will probably find yourself laughing at a lot of the scenes.
